Celonis, the German process mining startup, is embracing the power of generative AI with its latest feature, Celonis Copilot. The company, valued at $13 billion, helps businesses analyze the flow of work through various processes in order to identify inefficiencies. Celonis Copilot, built on top of the OpenAI API, allows users to ask questions about the process map displayed on a subway-style map.
Alexander Rinke, CEO and co-founder of Celonis, explained that while incorporating the AI copilot was a complex process, the company recognized its potential and decided to invest in its development. The copilot feature required careful orchestration, input, prompting, and vector database work. By integrating the OpenAI API into the product, Celonis aims to provide users with an enhanced understanding of their processes.
In addition to the AI copilot, Celonis is working on making its data more accessible and easier to integrate with large language models (LLMs) within companies. Instead of providing an LLM, the company focuses on processing the diverse types of data tracked in Celonis. This can be challenging, as different customers may describe elements of the same process differently. To tackle this, Celonis has taken a multi-pronged approach.
Firstly, the company is offering customers a standardized and structured way to process data, known as a process data model. This model combines all processes and scenarios into a single view, making it easier for LLMs to understand the data. Secondly, Celonis is defining the different elements of processes, such as defining what “on time” or “late” means for an invoice. This helps create a dictionary of process definitions, allowing for better understanding and analysis of the data.
Celonis also plans to provide an API layer to expose the data and allow for the development of applications on top of it. The combination of the process data model and the dictionary of process definitions forms a process intelligence graph. This graph exposes connections between different data types, enabling businesses to analyze and optimize their processes across systems and departments.
By creating a common language to describe processes and making it independent of underlying systems, Celonis aims to offer increased value and faster time to value for its customers. This approach also sets the company up to build a network and platform for process intelligence.
The new features and products are currently in private release as Celonis continues to refine and test them with customers. They are expected to be released sometime next year. Celonis has already raised $2.4 billion and plans to leverage its investments to further innovate and expand its offerings. With the introduction of Celonis Copilot and its focus on making data accessible and understandable, Celonis is poised to enhance process mining and analysis for businesses globally.
